IPL 2018 Review: Top 5 standout bowlers in the competition
Chennai Super Kings came out top against Sunrisers Hyderabad to lift their third IPL title. Here we take a look at the bowlers who topped the bowling charts in this year’s competition and produced splendid performances for their respective franchises.
Andrew Tye
First on the list is Kings XI Punjab’s Andrew Tye, who topped the bowling charts in this year’s competition. Tye had an incredible tournament with the ball and picked up 24 wickets in 14 innings at an economy of 8. He is also picked three four-wicket hauls in the competition. Andrew Tye was the standout performer for Kings XI in the competition. The most astonishing aspect of his bowling was that he used his subtle variations to good effect. He also won the Purple Cap for most wickets in the competition.
Rashid Khan
Second, in the list features Sunrisers Hyderabad leg-spinner Rashid Khan who picked up 21 wickets in 17 games at an average of 21.8. The most interesting aspect about leggie was his superb economy rate of 6.73 in the competition. Rashid Khan got off to slow start in the competition but found form at the crucial stages for Sunrisers Hyderabad. There is no doubt that he is the best spinner in the world in this format.
Siddharth Kaul
Third, in the list features Sunrisers Hyderabad fast bowler Siddharth Kaul who finished the competition as third highest wicket-taker behind his team-mate Rashid Khan and Kings XI Punjab’s Andrew Tye.
The 28-year old was initially picked as fifth bowling option in the lineup quickly gained prominence with back-to-back good performances with the ball. He finished with 21 wickets at a superb strike rate of 18.8 to his name. Kaul proved to be instrumental in Sunrisers reaching the finals of this year’s competition. He completely overshadowed Bhuvneshwar Kumar in terms of his bowling performances this season.
Kaul also received his maiden-call up to the national side and was included in the ODI and T20 squad for India’s tour of England. The youngster will be focused to make an impression in the series against England.
Umesh Yadav
Fourth, in the list features RCB’s pace bowler, Umesh Yadav. He turned out to be the standout for his franchise in this year’s competition. Yadav with his pace and movement troubled the opposing batsmen with the new-ball. The 30-year old claimed 20 wickets at an average of 20.90 with a superb economy rate of 7.86. He produced superlative bowling performances this season for Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Yadav also got selected in the T20 squad for the upcoming series against England. He will be keen to continue his rich vein of form with the ball against England.
Trent Boult
New Zealand’s Trent Boult did a terrific job for Delhi Daredevils with the new-ball. He proved to be a major threat with the new-ball and picked up crucial wickets for the franchise. Boult finished the competition with 18 scalps, fifth in the list for leading wickets in the IPL 2018. The 28-year old picked up wickets at an average of 25.88. His economy rate of 8.84 was little higher than others who make the list in this year’s competition.
Other notable mentions who did not make the list would be Chennai’s Shardul Thakur and Mumbai’s rookie spinner Mayank Markande. Mujeeb Ur Rahman also did exceedingly well in his first IPL season for Kings XI Punjab.
